COURTS READY TO SIT 24HRS, PROSECUTORS BLAMED FOR DELAYS

FRIDAY, 4TH MARCH, 2005 -- The courts are ready to sit on cases at anytime, says the Judicial Service. “In accordance with directives of the chief justice to all judges, the Judicial Service is ready to handle all cases every day for 24 hours,” said a statement issued by the judicial secretary in Accra yesterday.

The statement was in reaction to recent accusations made against the judiciary over delays in the prosecution of criminal cases. It said the judiciary had made available to the office of the attorney general six fast track courts in Accra, in addition to the regular high courts and circuit courts the chief justice has also directed all the courts in the country to hear criminal cases at all times throughout the year.

The statement explained that the criminal assizes, which used to run for a specific period of the year, now operates throughout the year with no break. In addition, two panels of the Court of Appeal had been provided for criminal appeals everyday.

“Meanwhile, the new commercial court which is to be commissioned today is empowered to try cases dealing with commercial fraud,” the statement said.
