A-G Demands List Of Criminal Cases
Thursday 3 March 2005 -- The attorney-general and minister for justice has directed the director of public prosecutions, Mr Osafo Sampong, to submit to him an inventory of all criminal cases, which have been pending before his assumption of office, for the necessary action to be taken on them.
A statement issued in Accra yesterday and signed by the minister, Mr J. Ayikoi Otoo, said the action was part of measures he was instituting “to ensure the speedy but fair trial of people who fall foul of the law and whose actions are a menace to society.”
It said; “It is the aim of the Government to expedite action on all such cases to ensure that justice is fairly and speedily administered.”
“Government respects the constitution of Ghana and in keeping with Article 19(1), all persons charged with criminal offence are entitled to be given fair hearing within a reasonable time in court,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Otoo has met with heads and legal officers of the security services and the Serious Fraud Office to find common grounds of ensuring effective and efficient administration of justice in the country.
He advised them to respect the constitution, especially in areas of arrest, restriction and detention, warning them not to detain any suspect beyond the constitutionally stipulated period of 48 hours unless such detention was upon the orders of a court.
