Blame parents, guardians for examination cancellation
30 May 2002 - The cancellation of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results should be blamed on parents, Mr Stephen Y. Appiah, Principal of the Dzowulu Special School for the Mentally Handicapped has said.
Parents and guardians, he said, had failed to perform the important duty of monitoring and encouraging their wards to learn thereby rendering them unprepared for the examinations. The state of unpreparedness, he said, was a recipe for examination malpractices.
Mr Appiah said these at the weekend when he received a donation of items worth ยข1.5 million from the Accra West Archdeaconry Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Anglican Church. He noted that the increasing rate of indiscipline in schools is due to the lack of vigilance by parents on their wards in and out of schools.
He expressed regret at the situation where most parents failed to discourage their wards against examination malpractices, adding that some parents even assist their wards to cheat in examinations.
Mr Appiah urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and assist the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure discipline in the education system by giving good counseling to their wards. He also urged the GES to institute effective measures to prevent examination malpractices in the future.
