¢2.8b Volta River Authority sub-station for Aflao

Aflao (Volta Region) 13 May 2002 - A ¢2.8 billion sub-station has been jointly installed at Aflao in the Volta Region, by the Volta Rover Authority and the Diamond Cement Ghana Limited, located at Aflao.

It is the sixth in the region. The station, which will become operational by the end of this month, will supply more than 10 million watts (10MVA) of electricity for the cement factory and Sogakope, Akasti, Denu and other towns in the southern part of the region. Its establishment was at the request of the Diamond Cement Ghana Limited, which would require about half of power to be supplied for its operations.

During a media facility tour to the station on Saturday, Mr Kweku Arkurst, Director of Engineering, Design and Construction, said that a 33 MVA transformer had been installed to ensure that the new station would improve power supply in the area as it would lesson the load on the transformer at Sogakope, which serves the area.

Work on the station, the 39th to be installed by the VRA in the country, started in mid-July, last year. Mr Arkurst noted that the installation had been in phases, adding that a 161 KV transmission line had been installed.
