ECG ON WARPATH
April 1 2002 -- Mr Francis Sam, Chairman of the Agona district branch of the Ghana Timber Association (GTA), on Thursday, warned that executives of the association would not hesitate in exposing illegal electricity connections and the tampering of meters at the timber market.
He said they would hand over the culprits to the law enforcing agencies before informing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Mr Sam was speaking at a meeting of Mr Bismark Awuku and Mr Charles Newton, District Manager and Technical Officer respectively of the ECG with members of the Association at Swedru.
He noted that the time has come for Ghanaians to heed the call for a positive change to enable the government to salvage the economy to make the country a better place to live in.
Members of the Association should support the campaign to ensure sustainable electricity generation and supply to promote industry, he said and appealed to the ECG to provide a separate transformer for the timber market. Mr Awuku said out of the 20 small-scale sawmills at the timber market, seven of them had tampered with electricity meters to avoid paying bills.
He blamed the fluctuation in electricity supply to the area on illegal connections and the tampering of meters and said offenders would be prosecuted when found. The District Manger urged the saw millers to seek technical advice in the installation of their machines to prevent power outage in the area, which causes considerable damage at the ECG substation.
He cautioned members of the Association not to condone and connive with ECG officials to avoid paying bills Mr Newton expressed concern about the use of substandard cables, which led to fire outbreak.
