GOVT SHOWED FORESIGHT SAYS VEEP
MONDAY, 25TH JULY, 2005 -- Vice-President Aliu Mahama has said the Government’s foresight in increasing the price of petroleum products last February has benefited the nation in the face of rising world market price of crude oil.
“Today, a barrel of crude sells at about 60 dollars and the Government is bearing the difference,” he said at Bolgatanga on Friday, when he paid a courtesy call on Naba Martin Abilba III, Bolga-Naba.
Alhaji Mahama was at Bolga at the start of a one-week tour of the Upper East Region.
He said the revenue accruing from the petroleum taxes was being used for the provision of roads, schools, hospitals and good drinking water.
“The Vice-President said apart from the ¢113 billion that the Government has released to meet the school fees of all pupils in public basic schools from September this year, plans were also afoot to provide at least one meal (lunch) a day for all children in school.
Referring to his tour, he said as a listening and responsive government it was necessary to interact with the people who put them in power to find out their problems and how to solve them.
