BackgroundThe GhanaHomePage is a comprehensive resource about the country Ghana. On this website you can find lots of news, information and entertaining stuff and get in touch with (fellow) Ghanaian people. The GhanaHomePage was conceived in 1992 by Francis Akoto, a Ghanaian living in Finland. In those early days the World Wide Web only consisted of a few thousand websites. Search engines such as Altavista did not yet exist and Yahoo was still running on the student computers of Jerry Yang and David Filo. As such it is no surprise that there was no information what-so-ever about Ghana on the World Wide Web. Francis Akoto put the first version of his GhanaHomePage on a server of the University of Tampere in Finland. As such the GhanaHomePage is propably the very first Ghanaian site on the Internet. Initially the GhanaHomePage consisted of a few pages of information about Ghana but it quickly expanded to a very comprehensive resource. And it didn't stop there. Francis Akoto also updated the website daily with news from Ghana and soon visiting the site became a daily routine for the ten-thousands of Ghanaians working and studying abroad. In 1999 the GhanaHomePage was re-located from the University server to the domain www.ghanaweb.com. At this stage Rob Bellaart, a Dutch publisher, assisted Francis Akoto with securing the future of this unique project. To this effect the GhanaHomePage was transformed into a third-generation website making it the first Ghanaian website using advanced technology such as dynamically generated HTML, databases and user-customization. In the past two years the GhanaHomePage has experiended tremendous growth. The traffic expanded with 430 % in 1999 and is still growing with 5-10 % per month. Currently the site attracts 22000 unique visitors on average per day while the site generates well over 11 million page impressions per month . The site is probably the only Ghanaian website and one of the few African websites to cross the magical limit of one million page impressions per month. As such GhanaWeb offers excellent opportunities to advertisers and investors. |
