Klinsmann: Ghana clash like a ‘knockout game’

US manager Jurgen Klinsmann believes a win against Ghana in Natal in the opening group game will define their success at the World Cup.

The Stars and Stripes are paired in Group G with the Black Stars, Portugal and Germany.

The former Germany international has tipped his native country and Portugal as the pre-tournament favourites to advance in the group.

“It’s pretty much just like a knockout game anyways,” Klinsmann told ESPN. “We know if we can get the three points (against) Ghana we put ourselves in a very good position for the next game against Portugal in Manaus, in the Amazon.”

He added: “Therefore it is very, very crucial we have a good start.”
