Striker Gilbert Fiamenyo scored his first goal of the season to hand Accra Hearts of Oak a deserved 1-0 win over Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday.
It was Hearts’ fourth consecutive win and with yesterday’s performance, David Duncan’s side sent early warning signals to archrivals and league leaders, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, of their intention to annex the league title this season.
The burly attacker’s 48th minute header provided the winning goal which sent the sizeable crowd of Hearts supporters into celebratory mood.
Both teams looked equally matched with the visitors finding enough space to operate in the half of the Phobians, whose clearest chance fell to striker Eric Kumi who wasted a good opportunity to shoot his side ahead in the first half.
After recess, coach Duncan introduced winger Ollenu Ashietey for Selassie Adjei and the petit midfielder justified his inclusion in the game when he initiated the move which earned the Hearts the winning goal. His clever pass into the opponent’s half was controlled by Owusu Bempah whose measured cross into Chelsea’s goal area was headed home by Fiamenyo.
Chelsea unleashed a ferocious charge in the latter stages of the game and even had a goal disallowed, but the Phobian defence remained resolute to prevent the Berekum lads from scoring an equaliser.
In other matches, Inter Allies' nightmare continued yesterday after they suffered their sixth straight loss in Wa where they lost 3-2 to All Stars.
A brace by Sidiki Adams, and Kofi Yeboah's winner helped the home side to victory as goals from Inter Allies’ Prosper Kassim and Simon Mantey were not enough to turn the scales.
At the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast,Liberty Professionals produced a rare away win when they stunned Ebusua Dwarfs 1-0 through a second half goal by Michael Appiah.
At the Gyamfi Park, Issa Adamu's equaliser ensured that Bechem United held New Edubiase United to a 1-1 draw after Sakyi Quaye put the home side into the lead in the 10th minute.
The fine start by Heart of Lions suffered a setback in Dormaa where they lost.
Medeama’s unimpressive start to the campaign continued last Saturday at Tarkwa after they played a goalless draw with visiting AshantiGold. It was Medeama’s fourth draw in the six-week-old league.
