Ghanaian defender Issahaku Leftey Yakubu is optimistic about Lierse SK's chances of securing promotion back to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League next season.

The 22-year-old joined Lierse from Ghanaian side JMG Academy in 2015, signing a two-year contract with an option for an additional year. However, the club suffered relegation that season but with Yakubu rising through the ranks to command a starting role.

Lierse are currently sitting top of the second tier log tied with Antwerp on 26 points ahead of the last game of the season against SV Roeselare and a win will qualify them for the final playoffs next month.

"I'm really happy with our performance this season and believe we will qualify back the top-flight. That is where we belong. I think we have the quality to go top despite the challenges ahead," Leftey told Goal.

"If we show our quality in the last game we’ll reach the playoffs, and I am positive we will make it to the top-flight for the new season. We have a good coach who understands the game and reads players and opponents very well.

"Last season, I suffered a hip injury but have been fit throughout this season, missing only three games. It's every player's dream to help his side so I hope I will enjoy a good game on Sunday to make the supporters happy.

“A good performance will also give me several opportunities since I want to represent Ghana with the Black Stars in future" he added.
