Black Stars have improved – Woyome

Mr Kobena Mensah Wisdom Woyome, the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee of Youth, Sports and Culture, has said the Black Stars are set to get over their difficult start to the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and put in a much-improved performance at the more competitive stages of the game.

The Stars and the technical team were criticised by the Ghanaian public for their unimpressive performance in their first two games. Fans were sceptical of the team’s ability to beat the Bissau-Guineans in their last Group F game but striker Jordan Ayew and midfielder Thomas Partey saw the team edge out Cameroon as Group winners.

Mr Woyome said the win over Guinea-Bissau would boost the morale of the team to progress as far as they can in the tournament.

“We were kept in suspense following our performance in the first two games. In fact, at a certain point, we were not sure whether we were even going to qualify and even if we were going to qualify, we were not sure what our position in the group was going to be.

“I think the players have done us well and, so, we pray that they continue this way. It looks like they keep improving match after match and we are confident they are going to get better just like we all do know them. I have followed the team for a while as a Member of Parliament and a fan and we appear to always have a shaky start at major tournaments but gradually turn the tides as the tournament progresses. I hope that would be the case this time, too, now that we have found our groove again,” he told Class Sports’ Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang who is in Egypt covering the tournament.

The Black Stars will play Tunisia on Monday in the Round of 16 at Ismailia.
