Christianity must advance the nation - Vice-President

Vice-President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has urged Christians to be bold to denounce indiscipline and other evils plaguing the society.

He said they must be steadfast in their resolve to fight corruption and all acts of impunity, inimical to the healthy growth of the nation.

The Vice President also reminded Christians to do more to assist the people to live in genuine peace and reconciliation and help deepen and sustain Ghana on the path of democracy.

Mr Amissah -Arthur was addressed the opening session of the eighth biennial conference of the Methodist Church, Ghana, at the Wesley Cathedral in Kumasi, under the theme “Witnessing to Christ - Teaching for effective Christianity”.

The four-day conference is being attended by bishops and former bishops from all dioceses across the country, the laity, ministers, department heads and the leadership of the various organisations within the church.

The conference would review the performance of the church in the areas of education, health, spiritual growth, outreach programmes and infrastructural development and also discuss the way forward to advance Methodism.

Vice-President Amissah-Arthur saluted the church for its significant contribution to the nation’s socio-economic development.

“The Methodist Church had for years served as an agent of change in many spheres of human endeavours” adding that, “the expectation was that it would continue to work to bring progress to the people”.

The Vice President asked the church to use the conference to strategise and strengthen its partnership with the state to make things better for all.

The Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, the Presiding Bishop, called on the government to step up efforts at tackling the development challenges faced by the nation.

He also encouraged the church to intensify its evangelisational work, to spread the gospel and turn people away from evil.
