College of Cardinals thanks Ghanaians

The Dean and College of Cardinals of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, that met in Rome to elect the new Pope Francis I has written to thank Ghanaians for praying with them when they met at conclave to elect a new pope.

In a letter signed by Cardinal Peter Turkson , it said, “The Dean and the College of Cardinals of the Holy Roman Catholic Church wish to thank heartily all of you, dear Brothers and Sisters, for your prayers for God’s guidance of their discernment and election of the new Holy Father, who, as “Servant of the Servants of God”, will devotedly serve the Church and the Human Family”.

Last week Wednesday the College of Cardinals elected Argentine Cardinal Jorge Murio Bergoglio as the new pope.

Appearing on a balcony over Rome's St Peter's Square he asked th faithful to pray for him.

Cardinal Bergoglio is the first Latin American and first Jesuit to be pontiff.

Pope Francis, 76, replaces Benedict XVI, who resigned last month at the age of 85 saying he was not strong enough to lead the church. He was elected to become the 265th Pope Wednesday March 13, 2013.
