Citizens asked to assist communities at home

Accra, Oct. 13, GNA - Citizens resident outside their communities have been asked to contribute meaningfully towards the development of such communities. Mr John Kofi Yamba, chairman of the Manyoro Youth Association, a community near Navrongo in the Kassena Nankana District made the appeal in Accra at the Association's 10th Anniversary.
Mr Yamba told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Wednesday after the Anniversary celebration held at Kantamanto that there were many ways citizens resident outside their communities could help to execute development projects such as clinics, provision of furniture and other needs. He said the government alone could not continue to provide the needs of all communities and stressed that "If we minimize the way we throng to Beer Bars for merry making, we can channel a lot of resources to help the less privileged in our communities". Mr Yamba said, "school children were still lying on their stomachs to write in Manyoro and other communities, while we spend a lot of money on drinks". He said the Association has been able to provide the community with dual desks and other educational materials to help enhance teaching and learning. He appealed to the government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in the Upper East Region to help with the provision of potable water and a dam to sustain the livestock industry and farming activities in the area. He commended the members for their commitment and hard work and called on all citizens resident in Accra to join the association. Oct 13, 04
