Massive clean-up exercise to mark Sanitation Day

Mr. Samuel Sarpong, Ashanti Regional Minister, has appealed to Ghanaians to attach importance to environmental sanitation, and work together to rid the communities of filth.

This, he said, is the way to go, to prevent the outbreak and spread of diseases.

Mr. Sarpong was addressing a press conference in Kumasi to outline measures put in place for massive clean-up exercises across the region on Saturday, November 1, which has been set aside as “National Sanitation Day.”

The exercise would be repeated the first Saturday of every month to create awareness on environmental cleanliness, and it comes in the wake of the cholera outbreak, which had so far claimed more than 190 lives and infected about 20,000 people.

Mr. Sarpong directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to lead the exercise in areas under their jurisdiction.

They should make sure that they involved chiefs, religious bodies, and the people to make it a big success.

He announced that a 15-member Committee has been set up by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to oversee that things go on smoothly.

Mr. Sarpong said Adventists are expected to do their part on the following day.
