Police on top of security situation

The police have denied reports that criminals are having a field day at the Kumasi Central Market and the Kejetia lorry terminal, terrorizing and making life miserable for the people.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Laar Baman, the “A” District Commander, with responsibility for these areas, said they "are on top of the security situation."

He said they had not gone to sleep but had stayed ahead of the miscreants and arrested many of them.

Chief Supt Baman gave names of some of the notorious criminals seized and being held by the police as “Taller”, Kwaku, “Sasabonsam’ and “School Boy”.

He was speaking when the Ashanti Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, visited the area - the economic heartbeat of Kumasi, to assess the reality of the situation.

The profuse denial comes after one of the private newspapers, the Chronicle, carried a story that sought to create the impression that the police had lost the battle against criminals at the market and the lorry terminal, as the outlaws have been attacking traders and travellers with impunity.

DCOP Boakye urged the people to refuse to be intimidated but to have courage to expose known criminals to bring them to justice.

He gave the assurance that the police would be there to provide them with the needed security protection.

They should go about their routine business without fear, he said, adding that, undercover personnel were operating 24 hours in the area.

DCOP Boakye warned those who have chosen to live outside the law to reform in their own interest because they police would come after them.
