Ashanti Region almost completes street naming project

Mr Samuel Sarpong, Ashanti Regional Minister has revealed that 90 per cent of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) in the region have completed the street naming and property numbering exercise.

"Even though some MMDAs would not be able to complete the exercise due to lack of sufficient funds, 90 per cent in the region are done,” he told Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Kumasi at the weekend.

He said the information would be captured in a General Packet Radio Service system.

Mr Sarpong said the exercise would help the security agencies in crime combating and enable personnel of Ghana National Fire Service to get easy access to control fires.

The exercise was a directive by President John Dramani Mahama to improve revenue generation.

Mr Sarpong said several workshops have been organised for residents on how to use the street names in identifying or locating a particular area or place.

Mr Kwaku Afrifa Yamoah-Ponko, Ejisu/Juaben Municipal Chief Executive told GNA that the assembly would launch the completion of the exercise on Tuesday, September 23.

Mr Yamoah-Ponkor said, stakeholders, including National Commission for Civic Education would be brought on board.

He said the importance of the exercise is that the assembly would capitalize on the data collected to increase revenue generation.
