A Guinea fowl says to a bull, "I would love to get on top of that tree, but I haven't the energy."
"Well," says the bull, "why don't you eat some of my dung? It's packed with nutrients."
So the Wild Guinea fowl eats some dung and finds that it gives him enough energy to get to the first branch. The next day, he eats some more and gets to the next branch. This cycle continues for a week. Finally, the Guinea Fowl is at the top of the tree, where he is spotted by the farmer, who shoots him with a shotgun.
Moral of the Story: bullshit might take you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

I was having this discussion with someone in GHana the other day, and he was laughing at me saying a graduate shouldn't farm. If ghanaians can put their pride away, farming indeed can boost the economy. I know a guy in Ghana who struggled in the U.S and went back to ghana, and purposely build a tomato farm. The guy is doing great.

You people just like to talk !! Here are some of the problem why the youth won’t waste their time with the practice. Our agricultural problems have been related to misguided policies, weak institutions and a lack of well-trained human resources.
Where is the support and encouragement? What has been done over the years to attract the youth in to agriculture, what has been done to expose the youth to agricultural production strategies. Besides dancing, religion and singing on TV is there a national forum that the youth can discuss new ideas, introducing modern methods and new simple techniques that would increase yields in agriculture.
Where in Ghana can the youth learn about agriculture management skill which can be utilized in the modern practical working environment?
Today it is almost impossible to make a decent living out of agriculture in Ghana.

That is true. But it depends on the clueless govt. There should be changes in the land tenure system, at least the field needs to be cleared mechanically by the gov,t instead of using cutlasses which is seen as punishment, making loan available and guaranteeing post harvest market. Farming will be attractive to the youth if it is less punishing and profitable. This will stop all the woes the country is having, whether cedi depreciation or what have you including agro base industries

We're chasing jobs that doesn't exist.
Those that exist we refuse to chase them.
Farming may not be lucrative, but it can open avenue for other businesses. We got to give it a try.

A lot of my people have left the village and have gone to Accra looking for work which they never find. They get frustrated and are easily led into petty thefts and further into armed robbery.
Vietnam which was ravaged by war has in the last 30 years reduced youth unemployment from 90% to 10% by just growing coffee. I visited Malaysia and saw huge palm plantations a distance of about from Accra to Winneba. The seedlings came from Ghana. My host told me they harvest the fruits and produce oil for export to Saudi Arabia. The Saudis according to him were ever ready to buy. The Malaysians used the money to build roads , Hospitals etc. We have opportunities to transform Ghana by embracing Agriculture as we have a fertile land. We need the Youth who are educated to get into Agriculture as illiterates cannot do it. We need young Graduates etc to lift us out of poverty . Farming is what we do best and that as a profession should be embraced. I know of an Engineer who left Valco on a good paid salary and went into farming.
He told me at Xmas that that was the best decision he has made.
he came to visit me in his Mercedes Benz Car which he bought with money from the farm.
New Zealand is a small country but has the ability to feed the whole of Africa because they are farmers. These farmers are graduates and they are one of the richest people I have met.

As a way to jump start an agricultural revolution that is sustainable, and thereby end. the economic crisis that is bedevilling our country, we must , first of all end the urban bias against any thing "kookoase". The little bit rural folks produce is sent directly to the urban areas. The Kookoase majority are to a large extent voiceless. This is unsustainable.
We must change course, if we are to develop sustainablly.
