Improper handling of accident victims major cause of deaths-NRSC

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has identified improper handling of accident victims as one of the major causes of avoidable deaths.

To curb the situation, the NRSC, Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) and Ghana Ambulance Service (GAS) would collaborate to train identifiable groups in the region on proper handling of accident victims.

The Western Regional Manager of the NRSC, Alhaji Sumani Mbo, made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting in Takoradi on Thursday.

He said the NRSC, Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the GRCS would start training new drivers this year on proper dispensing of first aid to accident victims.

Alhaji Mbo said the NRSC would step up education on its emergency numbers so that personnel of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) and accident squads at Axim, Bibiani, Enchi and communities in Sefwi area would promptly report accident cases.

He expressed worry over poor road network in the region which is a contributory factor to high incident of road crashes on the road especially in the northern sector of the region.

He appealed to the government to devote more resources towards rehabilitation of roads in the region to reduce road fatalities.
