Residents at Abesim worried about power outages

Residents of Abesim, near Sunyani in Brong-Ahafo Region have expressed concern about regular power fluctuations and outages in the area.

They were worried that if immediate measures were not taken to address the continued power failure and fluctuations in the area “something worse” would happen.

The residents raised the concern in an interview with newsmen at Abesim, when a raging fire raised down parts of Glamossay hotel in the area.

Madam Bernice Boatemaa, a cold store attendant, emphasized that if residents in the area had consistently reported the matter to the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) regional office in Sunyani but no action had been taken.

On Saturday June 30, 2012, a raging fire gutted the hotel and destroyed properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Other personal properties belonging to clients were also lost to the fire, which was however brought under control by officers from the GNFS.

Meanwhile, Management of hotel has attributed incident to an electrical fault due to intermittent blackouts.

They said the hotel was still in operation as only 12 rooms, in the two-storey facility, were affected by the fire, which recorded no casualty.

Ms. Joana Twenewaah Bennet, Manageress of the hotel pointed out that 24 rooms, two conference halls, two restaurants, the pool and the gym were not affected by the fire.

She explained the fire started around 0830 hours on Saturday but several attempts made to reach the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on its telephone yielded no positive response as the lines were always engaged.

Ms. Bennet said due to the severity of the fire, efforts made by some neighbours to help put it off proved futile.
