Work starts on Prestea/Mumuni road

Prestea Nkwanta, Aug 27, GNA - Work has started on the 43.2-kilometre road from Prestea Post Office through Samreboi to Mumuni in the Western Region.


The first phase of the project, estimated to cost GH¢24 million, is being executed by Asabea Engineering Company Limited, a Ghanaian firm, and expected to be completed in 24 months.

The project, which is solely financed by the government, will involve bush clearing, earth works and the construction of 19 bridges.

Mr. Francis Adu-Blay Koffie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Prestea-Huni-Valley, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Prestea Nkwanta during an inspection of some on-going cocoa road projects in the district.

He expressed delight about commencement of the project, saying, it would relief the people of Prestea Nkwanta and its environs.

Mr. Koffie noted that transporting sick people and women in labour, had been a challenge in the area due to the deplorable roads, regretting that some expectant mothers ended up losing their lives before reaching the hospital.

He said although transporting cocoa from Prestea to the Takoradi Port was shorter compared to transporting them to neighbouring countries, some cocoa farmers preferred smuggling them to Cote D’Ivoire because of the difficulty in transportation.

The MP gave the assurance that government was committed to providing accessible roads to cocoa-growing areas, in order to increase the country’s National Gross Domestic Product.

Mr. Samuel Ofori Larbi, the prjoect contractor, indicated that 40 per cent of the roads under construction were complete, and promised to complete them within the 24-month schedule.
