West Akyem Assembly dissolved

Asamankese (E/R), Aug. 28, GNA - The West Akyem District Assembly was on Thursday dissolved, marking the end of its members' four-year-term of office.

Before dissolving the assembly, the Presiding Member, Mr Daniel Saforo Owusu, thanked members for their selfless devotion to work, which had enabled the assembly to chalk many successes.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Sintim-Aboagye, noted that unity, understanding and consensus building characterized all the assembly's deliberations and activities and praised out-going members for that.

The DCE announced that the West Akyem District had been selected as one of two districts among the 138 districts in the country to benefit from the government's 5.8-million-dollar Rural Electrification Project to be carried out with a grant from the Japanese government. He said 26 communities, which had already been identified would benefit from the package.

The district's two members of Parliament, Mr Samuel Sallas-Mensah (Upper West Akyem) and Mr James Apietu-Ankrah (Lower West Akyem), expressed their appreciation to members for the co-operation they enjoyed, which they said had enabled them to collectively move the district forward.

Each outgoing member was presented with one million cedis part-payment of ex-gratia award of 1.5 million cedis with the promise to have the balance paid before the end of December, this year. Additionally, the assembly on its own presented each member with one solar lantern valued at 800,000 cedis.

The District Chief Executive promised that all members would be presented with a certificate of merit in recognition of their invaluable services to the assembly later.

Mr Sintim-Aboagye presented two motorbikes procured at the cost of 50 million cedis to the management of the West Akyem District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme.

He said the gesture was to encourage them to reach out to the remote areas in their education and registration drive for increased in membership, saying he hoped that the scheme would be able to hit the 50 per cent registration target by the end of the year as set by Parliament.

Receiving the bikes, Mr Humphrey Agyeman, Scheme Manager, expressed his appreciation to the assembly for the offer and promised that they would be well maintained and used to promote the work of the scheme.
