Wa commercial banks flooded, workers go through ordeal for salaries

Wa, Aug. 31, GNA - Commercial banks operating in the Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region, have for the past one week been flooded with students from the University for Development Studies (UDS) Wa campus making it extremely difficult for workers to collect their August salaries.

The students, some of which comprised fresh students who were paying fees for the academic year, usually start queuing in front of the banks at about 0500 hours to wait for the banks to open at about 0830 hours.

The situation at the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Stanbic Bank and Barclays Bank, has left most workers without money as they found it difficult to rub shoulders with the students to collect their salaries.

Some of the students, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa on Tuesday, expressed worry about the situation and called on the authorities of the University to device other ways and means that could allow them to pay their school fees without going through such stress.

The situation has become an annual affair at the beginning of every academic year when fresh students were being admitted.

The students said they were not also happy about the increasing number of admissions every year by the University without the corresponding increase in infrastructure such as lecture halls and hostels.

They complained that the lack of adequate hostel facilities at the University had led to the astronomic increases in rent by land lords in the Wa Municipality placing a burden on students and their parents.

The students also appealed to the banks including new ones, which would soon be coming to the Region to consider opening branches on the University's campus to prevent students from traveling to town to disrupt workers from enjoying good banking services.

"Students and workers in the region deserve to have effective, efficient and stress free banking services to transact their businesses", one of the students emphasized.
