Tension Mounts At Kwamang

An attempt by the youth of Kwamang, near Asante Mampong to attack the occupants of Ekuase land last Wednesday failed because they fled.

Occupants of the land, mostly farmers and illegal chainsaw operators, fled before the youth got to the disputed land, Chief Superintendent Opare Addo, Mampong Divisional Police Commander, told the GNA that the youth carried single barrel guns and fired shots into the air. He said the youth alleged that the Kumawuhene, Barima Asumadu Sakyi, notwithstanding, the fact that the Ekuase land was in dispute had given large portions to timber contractors and farmers.

Mr Addo said the people of Kwamang reported the issue to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II but his efforts to resolve the issue failed because the Kumawuhene had on several occasions found excuses not to appear before the Asantehene. He said the failure of the Kumawuhene to appear before the Asantehene last Wednesday triggered off the youth action. Mr Addo appealed to the youth to handle the situation with circumspection to avid bloodshed.
