Road Minister worried over reckless driving on the roads

The Minister of Road & Highways has expressed worry over the recklessness of drivers on the roads in recent times.

“Ironically, most of the accidents occur on roads which are deemed motorable at a rate of five to seven accidents in a day within Accra alone, this is highly unacceptable why can't our driver be careful on these good roads just as they do on the bad parts of the road," Mr Amin Suleman rhetorically asked.

Consequently, the minster has called on all concern, especially drivers who use these roads to be vigilant “because the lives of passengers and other road users depend on them”.

Recklessness on the part of drivers has contributed to numerous accidents and loss of lives on the stretch of roads in Ghana.

Mr Amin Amin Sulemani has therefore called on stake holders in the sector to intensify road safety education to avert the increasing rate of accidents in the country.

The minister said this when he presented some road safety equipment to the Motor Transport Traffic Department (MTTD) in his office on Tuesday. The equipment includes alcoholic sensors and speed check devices.

The minister commended the MTTU on its efforts over the years in ensuring discipline on the roads and also stamping its authority and commitment to extinct corruption within its unit to ensuring sanity on the roads as a measure to save lives lost through road accidents in the country.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways and its sector agencies have to the best of their ability put in place the best road construction designs in terms of foot bridges, combined cycle, pedestrian crossing, and the well laid-out graded traffic junctions.

To ensure safety on the roads yet drivers violet road traffic regulations especially speeding thereby leading to fatal accidents on the roads.
