Past Holy child students hold mentorship seminar for students

The 1988 year group of the Holy Child Past Students’ Association (HOPSA 88) has organized a mentoring seminar for final year students of the School to create opportunity for the students to learn from the professional and social lives of past students working in a wide range of professions.

Members of HOPSA 88 are represented in industries and professions such as marketing, human resource, law, medicine, food science, events management, architecture, hospitality and academia.

This was contained in a statement on Friday by the Association and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra.

The statement said the event, which forms part of activities marking the 25th anniversary of HOPSA 88, gave the students the opportunity to interact with members of the association on their professional, family, social, religious and recreational lives.

According to the statement, a panel discussion involving five members of the Association exposed the students to the deliberate and impulsive steps that led to the choice of their professions, the daily challenges they faced in managing work, home and other personal interests.

It said students were further exposed to how members’ support systems came from, how they relaxed and de-stressed and what the students could do with the various course options they were offering.

The statement said during the interactive session, students asked questions relating to their choice of electives and post-secondary education, the influence of one’s passion in the choice of career, how to handle male chauvinism at the workplace and the influence of one’s religion in specific professions.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Department of Linguistics, University of Ghana, moderated the panel discussion, with the following as members; Dr. Maame Yaa Nyarko, Paediatrician and Head of Clinical Services, Princess Marie Louise Hospital; Ms. Shirley Acquaah-Harrison, Head of Marketing L’Oreal West Africa and CEO, Ascend Ghana.

The rest were Mrs Jessica Nkansah, Head, Fish Control and Export Project Department, Ghana Standards Authority, Mrs. Justice Angelina Mensah-Homiah, High Court Judge and Mrs Jocelene Buckman, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication, Tecno Ghana Ltd.

The young ladies were also offered the opportunity, during their vacation, to observe the professionals at work to enable them get a practical sense of what goes on in the various professions.

In her closing remarks, the President of HOPSA 88, Mrs Charity Sedinam Mammara, asked the students to effectively use their youthfulness and the resources at their disposal for national development.

She said HOPSA 88 was renovating the computer laboratory and also replacing the school’s sign boards as part of activities marking the anniversary celebration. The students expressed appreciation for their encounter with HOPSA members and pledged to put what they learnt to good use.

The climax of the anniversary celebrations would be the sponsoring of the school’s 67th Speech and Prize Giving Day on March 23.
