Ofosuware approved as Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive

Tema, April 24, GNA - Fifty-five assembly members of Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), on Friday unanimously approved Mr Robert Ofosuware, 46-year-old accountant as Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive. Mr Ofosuware who got the nod despite the controversies surrounding his nomination was mobbed by his supporters who besieged the assembly hall immediately Mr Michael Boadu, Tema Regional Electoral Officer announced the confirmation.

His nomination had been criticised by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema and Kpone alleging that Mr Ofosuware is a criminal because he was facing three fraud charges in Tema and Accra courts.

The assembly members also elected Mr Kingsley Kwame Appiah as Presiding Member after he failed to secure two thirds of the votes in the first round.

They were sworn into office by Mr Justice Nana Gyamrah Tawiah Dwamena, Supervising High Court Judge for Tema.

Both of them expressed their gratitude to the members and called for their support, hard work and cooperation to ensure rapid development and transformation of the industrial city.

Supporters of Mr Ofosuware who had filled the premises of the assembly poured to the principal streets jubilating amid drumming, singing and dancing after the confirmation.

Nii Armah Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, addressing the assembly before the election, described the event as very important geared towards socio-economic development of the country. He called on the assembly members to bury their differences and effectively develop the metropolis noting that members were elected into office to serve the people not to amass wealth.

Nii Ashitey re-emphasised the commitment of Government to promote democracy in the country through the implementation of provisions of the Local Government Act. 24 April 09
