Northern Students Union Unveils Northern Child Migration Project

Northern Students Union in collaboration with Tertiary Advocates for the Rights of Children of KNUST Unveils Northern Child Migration Project.

The Northern Students Union in collaboration with the Tertiary Advocates for the Rights of Children have registered more than hundred northern child migrants in the Kumasi metropolis under the National Health Insurance Scheme in a project called the Northern Child Migration Project. Addressing child migrants in the Kumasi central business district the president of the two bodies and founder of the project, Mr. Solomon Anzagra indicated their unflinching desire to ensure dignified lives for the unfortunate children who for no fault of this have found themselves in this life-threatening circumstances. This was when the temporal NHIS cards were being distributed to child migrants covered under the project on Monday the 5th of November 2012 awaiting the permanent cards to come later. He took the opportunity to thank all everybody who helped in one way or the other for their support and urged the public to support in any way they can to help ensure that the children, at least, meet basic life sustaining needs. He further indicated the fact that, from a research study of which he was the lead author, the children do a lot of over the counter drug buying for fear of being charged high amounts of money in hospitals because most of them do not have the NHIS, which has negative health consequences on them especially in the future. He continued that it was based on the research study that this project was hatched. He indicated they had the intention of covering as many child migrants as possible should they get enough funding because considering the conditions of life of these child migrants in terms of what and where they eat, where they sleep and what they do the NHIS is a necessity for them. The president Mr. Solomon Anzagra further stated that the full and original package of the project was to embark upon a northern-wide sensitization that is across the three northern regions, of both potential and returned child migrants and then subsequently register those who have already moved, under the NHIS but for lack of funds the sensitization could not be done. He therefore entreated NGOs and private companies who have missions in line with this issue to see it as one of the priorities and an important corporate social responsibility. They should therefore come in to offer diversified support to help curb the menace.
