dredging lagoon

Elmina(C/R), Jan. 19, GNA - Nana Ato Arthur, Central Regional Minister on Friday called on fishermen and residents of Elmina to offer personnel dredging the Benya lagoon the needed support and cooperation towards the project.

He asked management of the company 91International Marine and Dredging' to liaise with the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem District assembly, traditional rulers and fishermen to avoid unnecessary confrontation that would affect their operation and early completion of the project.

Nana Arthur made the call during a tour of the project site and expressed satisfaction about the work done.

The project estimated at about 13.3 million Euros is being funded by the Belgian Government and expected to be completed by the end of the year includes restoration of the break water.

In addition, banks of the lagoon would be widened and dredged to about two meters deep to enable easy flow of boats and canoes. Nana Arthur urged personnel of the company to work hard and refrain from demonstrations or strikes action and channel all their grievances to the appropriate quarters for redress.

Dr Asare Boafo, Resident Engineer and Ms Wendy Goossen, Site Engineer said the company had mobilized all the needed equipment and tools to the site and work would begin in February. They gave the assurance that fishing activities would not be banned on the lagoon and measures would be instituted to ensure the project was completed on schedule.

Mr George Frank Asmah, District Chief Executive of Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem appealed to the local staff of the company to work hard and avoid pilfering, unnecessary demands and endeavour to be time conscious to ensure early completion of the project.
