Tamale, Jan. 31, GNA- The Tamale Ward "K" constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday undertook a general cleanup exercise in the area as part of activities to mark the party's victory in the 2008 general elections.

A large number of party faithful and supporters made up of the youth and the elderly swept and clean around the public toilets in the constituency and also weeded around houses and school compounds that were over grown with weeds.

Mr. Zakaria Yamusah, the constituency chairman of the party who led the people in the exercise said the supporters embarked on the cleanup to demonstrate that the new NDC administration was serious about environmental sanitation.

He said the unhygienic environment in which people lived was a contributory factor to the spread of diseases which were preventable, adding that by their example they wanted to educate the people to take proper care of their surroundings to avoid contracting diseases. He said the cleanup exercise would be organized at regular intervals and urged supporters of the party to use such occasions to educate the public on the good intentions and development plans the government had for them.
