Man jumps to his death at KNUST

Kumasi, March 18, GNA - Authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are still battling with the identity of a young man who allegedly jumped from the seventh floor of Unity Hall of the University, resulting in his death on Tuesday evening. The deceased, believed to be in his 20's, died shortly on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he was referred to from the KNUST Hospital.

Mr. Solomon Panford, Public Relations Officer of the university, told the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday that the university authorities had still not been able to identify the deceased and that they were relying on the security agencies who had taken over investigations. He said the police had retrieved a mobile phone from the pocket of the deceased and were trying to search for numbers to contact in order to identify the deceased.

However, Mr. Patrick Afram, the Unity Hall Vice-President, told the GNA that the deceased gave his name as Kofi Manu. He said the deceased initially told the students who went to the scene of the incident that he was a first year Business Administration student but later when he was being taken to the University Hospital said he was from Ejisu.

Mr. Afram said the incident still remains a mystery to both students and hall authorities because nobody knew how and when the deceased entered the hall as well as the motive for his jumping. He said for now they could not tell whether he went to the floor to steal but he was found to be wearing two pairs of jeans trousers. Mr. Afram said this was the second time in three years that somebody had jumped from a floor of the hall to his death. The KNUST police confirmed the incident to the GNA and said the police were investigating.
