Kwabenakwa residents protest against absentee teachers

Kwabenakwa (Ash), Jan 14, GNA- Residents of Kwabenakwa, a farming community near Tanodumase in the Atwima-Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, have withdrawn their children from the local primary school to nearby schools, in protest against the persistent absenteeism of the teachers.

Only five out of the 98 pupils have remained in the school.

Nana Addai Mununkum, the chief of Kwabenakwa, told a meeting with officials of the District Directorate of Education that the recalcitrant teachers should be transferred to end the stalemate.

Mr Tweneboa Kodua, Assembly member for Gyereso, advised the residents to show more commitment to the education of their children. Mr Baffour Asare-Bediako, an Assistant Director of Education in-charge of Human Resource Management and Development, assured the communities that the teachers would sanction to serve as deterrent to others.

Mr Asare-Bediako said more teachers could be posted to the school if enrolment was encouraging.
