Kumasi gets new modern landfill site

A 100-acre landfill site with modern waste management facilities has been constructed at Dompoase to serve the people of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The facility was made possible by the French government through its development agency, Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The landfill site, which is capable of containing all the solid and liquid waste generated in Kumasi, has two cells and was constructed at the cost of two million euros.

It has a lifespan of up to 10 years if well manage and maintained, and designed treat leachate from it as well as reduce stench.

The new facility is expected to take the pressure from the old landfill, which authorities of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly say has been in operation for the past 15 years.

The Minister of Local government and Rural Development, Alhaji Collins Dauda, said the project would make the Kumasi landfill site the most sophisticated facility in the country.

“We need to respect the bye-laws of the city, which have been instituted with the idea of making life worthwhile for them,” he appealed to the people of Kumasi.

He also urged residents to properly manage the waste they generate to prevent cholera outbreak and other diseases.

He said everything was being done to ensure that sanitation in the city was handled well in order to promote healthy and safe environment for all.

The assembly would regularly spray the landfill site and also provide basic protective gears for sanitary workers who would be posted to the site, he promised.
