Government to reconstitute UEW Council

The Minister of State responsible for Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has said his office will ensure that the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is reconstituted within the week.

He added that the Governing Councils of other tertiary institutions will also be reconstituted in a few days’ time.

Addressing the press after a crucial meeting with the management of the UEW at its North Campus, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University College said government was committed to ensuring normalcy in the university.

He appealed to university students to remain calm, adding that government had advance plans in resolving the recent impasse.

According to Prof Yankah, whether the decision taken by the alleged illegal governing council as well as graduates certificate will be revoked or not depend on the court ruling. However, he hoped the yet-to-be-formed governing council would work hard towards an out-of-court settlement.

The UEW Local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Samuel Ofori Bekoe, refused to comment on the decision of university lecturers to return to the lecture halls despite Prof Yankah's plea.

"We hope for the best, we will give our official statement on Thursday," Mr Bekoe told Class News’ Central regional correspondent Maxwell Attah.

The meeting was attended by university management including UTAG representatives.

UEW has been sued by one Supi Kofi Kwayera, who is challenging the legality of certain actions taken by the then Governing Council of the university whose mandate had expired in 2013 but was still operating.
