Education remains life-wire of development-Veep

Half Assini (W/R) Nov. 1 GNA - Vice President John Dramani Mahama has said education remained the livewire of any development and investing in it was necessary. The vice-President said this in an address read for him by the Minister for Education, Mr Alex Teeth Enyo at the Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration of the Half Assini Senior High School at Half Assini on Saturday.

The theme for the celebration was "HASCO; 50 years of quality education and beyond". He said it was in this direction that the government cherished education and its commitment to ensure building a better Ghana by investing in the people.

Vice President Mahama said the development of education had largely been the responsibility of the government since the colonial days through community-led schools to the present when "we are experiencing the involvement of the private sector". He commended all stakeholders in education who have contributed to the development of education in the country.

Mr Kwodwo Edjah, the Headmaster of the School, said the school scored 97 percent in the 2009/10 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, making most of the students to gain admission to the tertiary institutions. Mr Edjah said the aim of the school was to obtain 100 percent in the 2010/11 examination and commended well-wishers of the school for presenting sporting equipment and offering other assistance to the school.

The secretary of the Half Assini Senior High School Old Student Association, Mr Stephen Blay, said the association had decided to fence the school to prevent encroachment on school land through contributions from year groups.
