ECG’s new sub-station to boost power supply in E/R

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned a new Sub-station at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region to improve upon the supply of power in the region.

The project forms part of the five corporate pillars of the company which include improvement in system reliability, improvement on customer services, improvement in reducing system losses, improvement in operational efficiency and improvement in organisational culture.

The Substation which has both 33kv and 11kv feeders will serve about 53,541 customers in towns such as Nkawkaw, Donkokrom, New Abirem, Kwahu – Tafo and Mpraeso respectively.

General Manager of the Eastern Regional ECG, Ing. Michael Baah, in his address stated that even though the current energy generation challenges are adversely affecting the company’s operations, the region is working hard to make things better for its customers.

He indicated that the establishment of the US$1,350,411.40 worth substation reflects the company’s corporate mission to provide quality, reliable and safe electricity services to support the economic growth and development of Ghana.

He also stressed the need to ensure a flexible power distribution system rather than a radial system which comes with it associated operational challenges.

He said the region can now rely on an alternative supply to its customers whenever GRIDCO knocks down feeders adding that “we can now manage the supply to our customers through this substation”.

Ing. Baah disclosed that the Region has completed 45 major projects which include HV System Upgrades and Network System Injections to better respond to the demanding customer needs.
He added that, there are about 43 additional on-going projects across the thirteen (13) districts of the region and that when completed will address the pressure on the region to cater for the additional load demand.

Ing. Baah advised the engineers and regional maintenance team to make good use of the equipment and adhere to routine maintenance of the substation for the equipment to last longer.

He also advised the general public to desist from all forms of illegal activities that affects the company’s revenue, adding that any person found to be engaging in stealing from the company in any form would be surcharged.

He emphasised the company seriousness on debt recovery and therefore would not spare anybody who is caught in engaging in any form of illegal activity pleading with the citizens to endeavour to pay their electricity bills to avoid being disconnected.

He therefore urged the public to call on ECG at any time with their complaints. “Our doors are open, call on us at any time and we shall attend to your needs”.
