Dormaa Assembly demolishes central business market

The Dormaa Municipal Assembly has started demolishing market stores at the central business area to pave way for the construction of a new multi-storey market complex.

The project, funded by the World Bank, aims to improve the socio-economic condition of the people in the Municipality and create the right environment for businesses to thrive.

It would also enhance the revenue generation base of the Municipal Assembly.

A Sunyani High Court had given the green light to the Municipal Assembly to proceed with the construction of the new market complex after members of the Dormaa Traders Association had filed a law suit to restrain the Assembly from going on with the project.

The 45 affected traders were subsequently advised to relocate into a temporary structure built by the Assembly at ABB.

They would be expected to return after completion based on an arrangement with the Assembly.

The construction of the market had attracted mixed feelings and reaction among residents as others extolled the Municipal Chief Executive for embarking on the project, while others condemned the move, saying it would destroy businesses of traders and sources of livelihood of families.

Checks by the GNA revealed that none of the affected traders had at yet moved to the ABB Market.
