Children’s ward at Akim Oda receives donation

About 25 patients at the children’s ward of the Akim Oda Government Hospital in the Birim Central Municipality have benefited from a donation worth GH?500.

The Smart Club based in the Municipality, presented rechargeable lamps, quantities of biscuits, fruits/juice, sachet water, detergents, pampers and toilet rolls among other things.

The donation formed part of the club’s effort to complement other presentations by non governmental organisations to provide energy enhancing drugs and food supplements to the patients, mostly children.

Mr. Reynolds Aboagye, Chairman of the Club, said established on July 1, 2010 with eight members, Smart Club now has 170 active members who have given to themselves the zeal, commitment and enthusiasm to motivate and support children, the needy and the intellectually disabled.

He stated that the proper upbringing of the children was the shared responsibility of all stakeholders and stressed the need for all and sundry to help ensure that school children in deprived communities eat good diet.

Mr. George Kwasi Onumah, Secretary to the Club, urged children to uphold the values instilled in them by their parents and teachers like good leadership, discipline, morality, responsibility and excellence, in all that they do.

Mr. Onumah also seized the opportunity to urge parents in the area to make their children’s education and health a priority. He therefore advised them to invest more in their children's education and avoid spending unnecessarily on clothing and other unprofitable things.

Dr. Atta Larbi Sakyi of the Akim Oda Government Hospital, thanked the Club for the gesture and expressed the optimism that it would continue to support the hospital.

He asked parents not to wait until their sick children’s health deteriorated before rushing them to the hospital.

Dr. Sakyi commended the members and the authorities of the Club for the spirit of volunteerism. He appealed to other non-governmental organizations to endeavour to support the health institution since the government alone could not fund it. **
