Akyeremade community to establish Kente- weaving enclave

A “Kente-weaving enclave” is to be established at Akyeremade in the Asante-Bekwai Municipality as part of an initiative to boost the economy of the area.

The project, spearheaded by the leaders of the local community, would provide the people particularly the youth, with job opportunities and create wealth.

Mr Andrews Owusu, Secretary of the Akyeremade Unit Committee, said everything would be done to fully exploit the enormous economic potential of the area’s “Kente” industry, to better the lives of the people.

He told the Ghana News Agency that in line with the venture, an exhibition to showcase various Kente products would be organised during this year’s Easter festivities.

What would make the event even more unique is that the local population and invited dignitaries would all be adorned in Kente.

The week-long celebration is dubbed: “Fira kente hyia me” and would involve clean-up and tree planting exercises, foot ball gala competition, live band music, fund-raising and a beauty pageant.

Mr Owusu appealed to all citizens both resident and non-resident, as well as corporate bodies and institutions to identify with the project.**
