Ada: Fishermen catch sea cows

Fishermen at Ekye-Amanfrom at Ada had the shock of their lives when they caught three big sea animal called Manatee, Monday morning.

The fishermen who were on a fishing expedition after casting their net deep into the sea, felt they had made a good catch as their net was heavy to pull, but were stunned when they found out that they had not caught fish but rather these huge sea creature popularly known as Sea Cows.

They managed to draw the four animals, one of which escaped to the sea shore and had a difficult time killing them.The fishermen believe that the catch is a good omen for them as it will pave way for a good catch this week and beyond.

Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. They measure up to 4.0 metres (13.1 ft) long, weigh as much as 590 kilograms (1,300 lb),[1] and have paddle-like flippers. The name manatí comes from the Spanish “manatí”, derived from the Caribbean word sometimes cited as “manattouï”.


Manatees are occasionally called sea cows, as they are slow plant-eaters, peaceful and similar to cows on land. They often graze on water plants in tropical seas.
