Speed up the passage of GYEEDA Bill – Youth group

A Youth Group called the Concerned Youth of Upper East Region, has appealed to Parliament to speed up the passage of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) Bill.

The Bill, the group noted, when passed, would help provide jobs under the various models for the teaming youth without jobs.

A statement issued and signed by the spokesperson, Mr Abakuri Issa Mohammed, and copied to the GNA in Bolgatanga stressed: “This Programme is a critical intervention in harnessing the energies of the Youth in contributing towards the sustainable development of the country.”

The group stated that even though the programme had some challenges, Parliament could go ahead and pass the bill, while the problems were being addressed.

“As expectant youth, we were happy to learn the restructuring of the programme, and subsequently the Bill before Parliament. We must, however, state emphatically that the delay in the passage of the Bill is frustrating, and any further delay will in no small way lead to undesirable outcome.”

According to the group, before the programme was put on hold, it contributed significantly to the development of many sectors, particularly the health and education sectors, where it helped in addressing the challenges of personnel.

They, therefore, expressed the hope that with the passage of the Bill, not only would it support them, but it would also help augment the staff of the health and education sectors including others areas.

About 100,000 of the nation’s unemployed youth could be employed under the reviewed GYEEDA), the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, once said.

Meanwhile, the passage of the Bill, which is currently before Parliament for debate, had been vehemently opposed by the Minority, arguing that monies that were “embezzled” under the programme had still not been retrieved.
