NPP will still go for October congress - K. Agyepong

The General Secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyepong, says the party will still go for the October conference to elect a flagbearer in spite of the massive win by Nana Akufo-Addo in the super delegates’ congress.

The two-time flagbearer of the party garnered over 80 percent of the total valid votes cast in Sunday’s special poll intended to whittle down the number of aspirants from seven to five.

Out of 740 ballots cast, Nana Akufo-Addo had 598 votes, with Alan Kyerematen managing just 59 votes representing 7.98 per cent.

Per the results, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, the former Information Minister, who had 13 votes, and former Trade Minister Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, 10 votes, have both been dropped from the October National delegates congress.

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters after the declaration of official results, Mr Agyepong said: “Our party's constitution is supreme. This is the first phase and we have the five as I have announced, the process will continue, that is what our party constitution says. We will go on with the entire process”.

The October 18 conference will elect a flagbearer to represent the biggest opposition party in the 2016 elections.
