Government responsibility is not to take over the role of parents (e.g. feeding,clothing or buying sanitary pads) but handle the wider socio-economic problems that individuals cannot handle.Problems relating to employment, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, security, electricity, water, health etc fall in the domain of government. If parents are earning income then government will not buy sanitary pads. The government is neglecting its role and taking on the responsibilities of parents. The truth is, if government does not play its assigned role within society, very soon the whole system will break down. Sanitary pad is not the problem but unemployment. There are other problems relating to finances which affect school attendance by girls. Government should sponsor a new research to answer the questions on why girl school attendance is low;not if sanitary pads affordability affect girls' school attendance.

I visited a typical Cocoa growing forest,which you see mostly one-man settlement,two men setting, 3 families settled, etc up to a whole Village,for 2 mths in 1989.All are a little far apart from each other.
They have one or two days of the Wk set aside as Market day's at much bigger Village
or Town. Cocoa farmers cultivates food crops like cassava,plantain,cocoayam,maize,rice etc etc to feed themselves and family,and also to earn a little income.Therefore,the farmers who have foodstuffs to sell,solicit for the service of girls or young Women to carried their produces to the Market Center which is between 4-8 miles away in some cases for a fee. That is one reason for Girls absenteeism in those areas.And in some few cases Male Teacher harassment,the inability to pay for unapproved fee,spanking etc.
Again,so Alhaji Ahmed-Abdallah was a former NDC Regional Chairman in Brong-Ahafo. How many of these imbeciles do we have as regional Chairmen in the Country ! There is not any wonder we find ourselves where we are ! I wonder how that moron is managing his business. My sincerest condolences to his workers,if any.

This is an attempt to address a particular problem facing girls. In fact if government had the wherewithal, all school girls would receive free pads during their periods. As it is, the free sanitary pads are to be distributed to some of the poorest girls to enable them pursue a decent education. In any case, this outlay forms only a small fraction of the total loan package. The package is to build 23 community SHS and provide scholarships for 10400 children to pursue decent education.
This is a laudable goal which will positively impact the lives of these poor girls.

Following this man's submission, some obvious questions to be directed to him and the NDC govt are as follow:
1. Is this man a Medical Doctor to make the assertion that urinary tract infections are rife?
2. Is he the one contracted to supply and benefit (hugely) from this unjustifiable idea he is trying to defend/justify;
3. Have the girls (and possibly their mothers) in the so-called rural areas been reporting any urinary tract infection to this NDC guru;
4. Has he been patronizing or exploiting the ignorance and naivety of these girls such that he (the guru) may have contracted some sexually transmitted diseases (say gono) from them, thus can understand their plight now and not in the past when the country was ruled by another govt?
5. how did this guy know that the girls don't have good underwears (panties) and use unsanitary rags? Has he being, again, exploiting or patronizing them?
6. how does the nation cater for the needs of other girls who are not in school (but also require similar national support, if such supplies are to be provided)?
7. what about the male counterparts without underwears? Are they to go about as "anti-pe" (without pants, without their "libido" hanging between their ties)?
8. after 57 years of independence, does Ghana have to take a loan or spend part of a loan facility to supply, free-of-charge, sanitary pads?
9. why can't the govt manage the economy well and help create the usually touted "enabling environment" so that business will flourish in all corners of the corners of the country, so that such basic materials such as sanitary pads and condoms, underwears (panties), etc become easily accessible to/by all?
NDC guru and govt, better provide answers to these questions and stop displaying a high level of illiteracy and ignorance. The country DOES NOT need any policy on this. If the govt still finds the need to what they want to do, then the individuals in the govt (like Alhaji himself) should undertake this supply of sanitary pad as a personal, private and charitable project for those they have in mind. Those folks would, undoubtedly, be grateful to them.

My heart bleeds when i see or hear inepts like Mahama, okudjeto, etc making decision for a country like Ghana....power gone to dogs and beavers. Managing girl/women period has never been the business of the government and therefore Mahama must stay out of it and do something sensible to uplift the masses from poverty....education, health, portable water, electricity, feeder roads, maternal health, sustainable agricultureare all areas that need attention. Kenya and Uganda that practice the pad supply program approached it differently. The students produce or manufacture their own pads using locally sourced raw materials....perhaps NDC should send people to those countries to learn how the program works pathetic fools use your God given talent to benefit Ghana...than using it to steal from her, the least opportunity you get.
