‘Sack me if I don’t get 80% votes for NPP’

Aspiring Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Wontumi, has vowed to deliver 80% of votes for the party in Ashanti region if elected as regional chairman of the party.

The aspirant is putting his head on the line, challenging the party to sack him if he fails to commandeer the votes for the opposition party in the 2016 general elections.

The NPP has suffered consistent decline of votes in its stronghold during the last three elections, a development, which many believe, contributed to the defeat of the party in the last two presidential elections.

The NPP secured 74.39 and 70.86% percentage of votes in the 2008 and 2012 elections respectively, and this has raised serious concerns amongst functionaries as many believe the party is losing grounds in its stronghold.

The modest incursions by the NDC have also been seen as a major contributor to their two victorious. But one of the two contenders for the regional chairmanship position says he is hoping to reverse the trend and restore total dominance of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.

Chairman Wontumi, who also doubles as the Constituency Chairman for Bosomtwe, is promising a comprehensive and well thought out campaign strategy that will involve the utilization of all party machinery to ensure maximization of votes for the party.

The aspirant told The Chronicle newspaper in an interview that the problem with the NPP lies in its inability to mobilize resources in opposition to embark on grassroots campaign, a move he hopes to undertake when elected.

Forms for candidates contesting at the polling station and constituency levels and said he was ready to do even more to help increase the support base of the party.

According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not done anything good to merit votes of Ghanaians, stressing that the myriad of corruption, financial malfeasance and clear lack of leadership direction under the administration of President Mahama, were enough testimonies that the government has lost track and cannot therefore deliver on its promises.

He said what NPP needed was total unity and tranquility within its rank and file, stressing that once the party stands in unity, there is no way the NDC can win the 2016 elections. “I can assure you that if the NPP is united as one family and everyone remains committed, the NDC is not a match at all, more especially in the Ashanti Region,” he noted.

The aspirant therefore pledged to work with all constituency executives to ensure progress of the party.
