Weija water supply situation would be sorted, Minister assures

Mr Collins Dauda, Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, has said the on-going efforts to repair three out of the 12 filter beds at the Weija Water Treatment Plant would soon be over.

Mr Dauda said this during his first official visit to the facility after media outcry fearing there would be water shortages within Accra and its surrounding areas due to the reduction in supply of 10 million gallons of water daily.

He said the Weija Treatment Plant alone can supply at full capacity 54 million gallons of water daily to Accra but at the moment one of the filter beds was being repaired, which hopefully would be ready within two weeks.

Mr Dauda said the repair of the filter bed would initially add 3.5 million gallons and when that was done the Ghana Urban Water Company (GUWC) would work on another one to add another 3.5 million gallons.

He said with the measures being put in place by GUWC to rectify the situation, there would be a reduction in the number of days some suburbs would receive water as for instance, Dansoman which used to receive seven days of regular water supply in a week will now have five days, while Roman Ridge which usually get five days of regular water supply will have three days.

He said the Ministry will be undertaking a procurement process to select a company to carry on major repair works on the three filter beds.

The Minister said the demand for clean water supply in Ghana exceeds supply because of the rapid population growth and until we are able to resolve this problem, the nation will still be facing water shortages.

He said after the repair works, there would be a restoration to normalcy.
