Western Region has about 7,974 on Special Voters’ register

About 7,974 voters, comprising the security forces and election officials were expected to have cast their votes on Tuesday’s Special Voting in the Western Region.

The special voting by the Electoral Commission takes place every election year for such category of voters to vote ahead of the general elections to enable them carry out their duties nationwide to ensure successful and peaceful polls.

Mr. Steve Opoku-Mensah, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, during a tour at one of the voting centre in Takoradi told the GNA that he had observed a peaceful voting in all the five centres established within the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis.

He said, "There is no cause for alarm" adding that he believed in the new Biometric Voters Register form of voting.

At the Police Canteen centre at about 1040 hours, 190 people had cast their votes out of the 1,009 expected.

The voting generally was characterized by people not finding their names in the register. A number of centres the GNA visited had similar complaints from security personnel.

At the Catholic Church at Kwesimintsim, Mr. Richard Hammond, the presiding officer told the GNA that those whose name were not in the register for special voting would be allowed to vote on Election Day on Friday December 7th.
