Vakpo chief boycotts inauguration of North Dayi District

A total of eight out of the nine traditional areas forming the newly created North Dayi District Assembly with capital at Anfoega defied a heavy rain to witness the inauguration of the new district on Thursday.

With the exception of the chiefs and people of Vakpo traditional area, their counterparts from Awate, Aveme, Anfoega, Botoku, Tsyome Sabadu, Tsrukpe and Tsorxor graced the occasion.

The Chiefs and people of Vakpo had expressed their unhappiness about the choice of Anfoega as the District capital and threatened to boycott it.

Togbe Sasraku II, Paramount chief of Tsrukpe, on behalf of the chiefs expressed their deepest appreciation to the President for creating the new district and elevating the Kpando district to a municipal status.

He commended Ms Sena Akua Dansua, Member of Parliament for the area and Minister of Tourism, whose hard work translated into making “this dream a reality”.

In an address read on his behalf by Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, President John Evans Atta Mills said government has accepted most of the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission as they relate to local government and decentralization.

He said the countrywide inauguration of the new assemblies nationwide was in fulfillment of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2008 manifesto promise to deepen democracy and accelerate decentralization for a better Ghana.

Ms Dansua said the creation of the new district was the beginning of new things to come in the area and the people must reposition themselves for hard work to justify the trust reposed in them.

Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, Kpando Municipal Chief Executive, urged the people to unite and eschew bickering, laziness and rancor especially in this electioneering year.

He appealed to chiefs to make land available for development projects.

Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, Paramount chief of Anfoega traditional area, said the elevation was an opportunity to eradicate poverty in the area and called for total support to the new Assembly.**
