Voters register recipe for chaos – NPP’s Edmund Kyei

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has once again questioned the authenticity of the voters register insisting that appropriate steps must be taken to cleanse the data.

Edmund Kyei, Asokwa Constituency Communications Director of the party, argues that in other for the Electoral Commission (EC) to organize elections, which would be acceptable to all stakeholders in 2016, the voters register must be “clean-up”.

In his estimation, a fresh register could address needless controversies and protect the integrity of the polls and that of the EC.

“For Mrs Charlotte Osei to earn the trust and respect of the NPP and other political parties, she must adhere to the numerous calls that we need a new voters register for the 2016 election.

“What we have now is bloated and abnormal,” Mr Kyei told GhanaWeb in an interview.

There have been widespread calls on the EC by opposition parties and some civil society groups that the electoral register must be replaced for a smooth conduct of the next election.

But, the EC has repeatedly denied the claim, maintaining that the register is very healthy for the 2016 elections.

Mr Kyei, however, disclosed that the NPP would consider a boycott if the newly appointed electoral commissioner fails to address the party’s concerns.

“We are very clear in our minds what to do if our concerns are not properly addressed by Mrs Osei and her commission. I must emphasize that some of us will urge the leadership of the party to stage demonstrations to force the EC to do the right thing,” he warned.

In a related development, Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency, Madama Patricia Appiagyei, has urged followers of the NPP to remain united and work assiduously to ensure victory in the impending general elections.

According to the lawmaker, it is when party members adopt what she described as “all-hands-on-deck” approach that victory would be secured for the flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP in general.
