Take advantage of biometric registration exercise - NYA

National Youth Authority (NYA) has called on eligible young voters to take advantage of the national biometric registration exercise to register in their numbers.

“It is in registering that they become eligible to participate in governance in practical terms and have the opportunity to exercise their franchise when the opportunity arises”, it said.

The statement said besides voting, their registration constituted a precious political weapon which they could exploit to their advantage in negotiating their future within the perimeters of exercising the political and governance mandate of the political players and stakeholders.

It said the youth of the country constituted about 50 per cent of the population which plays a pivotal role in human resource base for sustainable development, adding that, the role of the youth in ensuring peaceful elections over the years could not be under estimated.

The NYA commended Electoral Commission for spearheading peaceful election in the country, saying the “National Youth Authority wishes to register its utmost confidence in the Electoral Commission to equal the task, but not without the support and commitment of all stakeholders, the youth of whom are key in this democratic effort we have all chosen to help construct”.

It said the role of the youth in the national biometric registration exercise was paramount to the future of the youth who are major stakeholders in the choice of national leadership.

The statement advised all responsible citizens to go about the registration exercise with the decency and decorum that would safeguard the current peaceful democratic dispensation that had been enjoyed over the years.**
