NDC to deepen relationship with governance institutions

Accra, July 22, GNA - Regional Chairmen of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Thursday adopted measures to deepen relationship with governance institutions to strengthen the tenets of good governance.

"The role of democratic governance institutions including civil society organisations, media, minority political parties, religious bodies and traditional rulers are vital for building a united country", Mr. Kobina Ade-Coker told the Ghana News Agency at the end of a National Stock-Taking Conference in Accra.

The conference attended by all regional chairmen, some members of the national executive, and other interest groups in the party was under the theme: 93Developing a Cohesive Agenda Towards Strengthening a Solid Party for Election 2012".

They used it to analyse party-government relations for the past 19-months, and developed measures to strengthen the party's structures as well as examination of the general political environment in the country.

In a 10-point communiqu=E9 after the conference, they implored cadres, party activists, and foot soldiers to cooperate with the leadership structure of the party at all levels to execute government's Better Ghana Agenda.

They directed the use of all internal mechanisms to address intra-party differences, while leadership was tasked to set in place systems for collaborating with all interest groups in the party.

Other issues included the involvement of all recognised groupings and interested parties at the constituency and regional levels in highlighting government's achievement and immediate measures to strengthen party structures towards Election 2012.

The rest are building a pro-active communication network at the regional levels for rapid response on national issues, strengthen relationship with the media, regional chairmen to work and deepen relationship with regional ministers and governance institutions.

The Regional Chairmen also resolved that as a ruling party, leadership should continue to create avenues and environment for working with minority political parties to strengthen the tenets of good governance and democratic frontiers.

The conference tasked the leadership to replicate the conference at the regional levels involving all constituency chairmen and other interested groupings.

Mr. Ade-Coker, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Party, said: "we have embarked on a steady course, which if we continue to chart with even greater determination and commitment without wavering would lead to strengthening democracy, development and integration".

He said the regional chairmen noticed that the peace process in some conflict zones of the country remained fragile, adding, "if allowed it to degenerate, it could become a major threat to peace and security of the entire country and undermine its economic growth and stability".

Mr. Ade-Coker therefore, called on all democratic institutions, traditional rulers, security agencies, political parties and the civil society organisations to continue to support government's efforts to bring lasting peace.

The NDC Regional Chairmen commended President John Evans Atta Mills for his relentless effort to build a better Ghana and fatherly role for the past 19 months.
